Times Square in NYC

The famous NY Times Square area got its name from the office headquarters of the New York Times. Today Times Square offers a vast array of entertainment for both tourists and New York residents.

Times Square is not an individual building, but instead an entire neighborhood located on Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets. You can see many Broadway theaters near here. It is easily accessible to visitors by subway or taxi.

The Times Square Alliance offers free walking tours every Friday at noon. Tours start at the information center and are conducted regardless of weather conditions. The walking tour includes a visit to some of the famous historic theatres.

The Times Square Information Center also provides help to visitors daily from 8:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. It is located in the Embassy Movie Theatre on Seventh Avenue. The center offers maps and assistance to tourists who may be unfamiliar with the area. The information center can provide you with tips on the best restaurants to eat in and the most popular places to shop.

Originally referred to as Longacre Square, Times Square is a flashy neon light neighborhood that attracts millions of visitors each year. The first electric billboard sign in Times Square appeared back in 1917. Today much of the neighborhood is adorned with advertisements and bright lights.

Times Square is well known for its dining and shopping establishments. Popular restaurants include Joshua Tree, Bangkok House, La Rivista, and Broadway Joe’s, which are all conveniently located on Restaurant Row. For those who love to shop, Times Square offers a unique choice of stores to choose from. The MTV and ESPN sports store are two places to find interesting gifts. Planet Hollywood located in Times Square offers many collectible items and memorabilia.
